UK: SIMPLER VED RATES FOR UK HAULIERS

Article Abstract:

The government has published a consultation paper setting out plans to change rates of vehicle excise duty (VED) and to encourage environmentally friendly vehicles. The proposal is to reduce the number of rates to just seven bands which it claims would make it easier for hauliers to carry different weights and change axle formation without changing their VED. The proposed bands and their rates are: A GBu 165, B GBu 200, C GBu 450, D GBu 650, E GBu 1200, F GBu 1500, and G GBu 1850. The government has also confirmed that hauliers will be entitled to rebates for this years VED.

IRELAND: BUDGET MEASURES HELP TRUCKERS

Article Abstract:

Following a day of protest in September 2000 and subsequent negotiations with the government, truckers in Ireland have been given a number of concessions in the country's Budget including a reduction of IRu 0.06 per litre in excise duty, abolition of the semi-trailer registration fee of IRu 25 and plans for lower excise duty of use of diesel with lower CO2 emissions. Measures to increase the ceiling for the lower rate of small firm corporate tax and improve capital allowances also benefitted Irish hauliers.

EUROPE: HAULIERS SET TO LOSE FUEL SUBSIDIES

Article Abstract:

European Commissioners have recommended the scrapping of essential user rebates, the fuel duty concessions under which French, Italian and Dutch hauliers currently receive rebates. The decision will be made on 27 November 2000 by the Financial and Economic Affairs Council. The proposal is part of a plan to do away with unfair competition by evening out the tax on fuel throughout the EU.
