U.S. Subsidizes Companies to Buy Subsidized Cotton

Article Abstract:

The Environmental Working Group used the Freedom of Information Act to access data on agricultural subsidies that not only make payments to cotton farmers but also to cotton manufacturers which buy cotton from subsidized farmers. Known as the upland cotton marketing certificate program, it was created in 1990 to help American manufacturers whose cotton-based products were more expensive than foreign imports. Brazil has filed a lawsuit with the WTO to force a change in US cotton subsidies and develop fairer trading practices.
