US: TECHNOLOGY TIE-UP BY CHANGHONG, MOTOROLA

Top television maker in China, Sichuan Changhong Electric (Changhong) in launching its digital TV sets in the US has formed a technology tie-up with American firm, Motorola. Motorola in this regard will have its MCT5100 M-DTV module being fixed at Changhong's digital TV. Starting from fall 2001, an American retail concern will be marketing Changhong's new offering, which is cheaper than existing high definition TV (HDTV) sets by around 30%. Audio with quality compatible to those of CD can be delivered by Changhong's digital TV, which is fixed with Motorola's M-DTV detachable section.

CHINA: INDUSTRIAL WORKFORCE TO REMAIN STABLE

Between years 2001 and 2005, the labour force employed in the industrial sector in Shanghai (China) is expected to remain unchanged, revealed Huang Qifan, the chairman of Shanghai Economics Commission. Since the middle of 1990s, the industrial sector has witnessed the redundancy of 1.3-mn workers in Shanghai. However, in the five years to come, the number of people employed in the sector is expected to remain stable. At present, some 2-mn workers in Shanghai are working in the industrial sector.
