Recall may mean end of road for brand name

Article Abstract:

Industry experts believe that Bridgestone/Firestone Inc's efforts to find an advertising agency that will save the Firestone brand are futile. They predict that it is unlikely that the 100-year-old brand can be saved after the company recalled 6.5 million of these tires in Aug 2000 because of defects that were only revealed to the public after numerous deaths and accidents. The best the company can do is phase out the Frestone name in favor of the Bridgestone brand.

U.S. carmakers limp to end of year with layoffs, poor profits

Article Abstract:

The US auto industry could end 2000 with unpleasant results, with DaimlerChrysler announcing that it would lose $1.25 billion during the fourth quarter, and Ford losing $1 billion in Europe. General Motors also has not fared well, and may opt to send production to Mexico, where wages are lower. It also plans to eliminate 20% of its current models. Nevertheless, Chrysler still expects to earn $445 million in 2000 due to a strong first half.
