Internet stock hoax ends in arrest

Article Abstract:

Federal investigators arrested a 23-year-old college student in Torrance, CA, in what SEC Regional Director Valerie Caproni said is the fourth known case of Internet stock fraud since roughly Mar 1999. Mark Simeon Jakob is accused of submitting a fake press release containing negative statements about fiber-optics manufacturer Emulex to Internet Wire, an online wire service for which Jakob had worked until the week of Aug 21, 2000. The release was carried by major news services on Aug 25, 2000, and sent Emulex' share value plunging temporarily by 62%. Jakob was alleged to have made over $240,000 from the scam as a result.
