U.S. lead in software faces a rising threat

Article Abstract:

The dominant position of the US in software development is threatened by a number of countries with highly educated work forces and lower living standards. Although federal predictions see software as one of the nation's five biggest growth areas, analysts fear that the maturity of much of the industry favors overseas programmers. Mature technologies are easily handled by modular, off-the-shelf software and do not need customized programs crafted by highly paid experts. Such modular software is increasingly being coded in countries such as Russia, Hungary, Brazil, India and Singapore where talented programmers will work for low wages. A 1992 survey of program quality in various countries ranked the US seventh and indicates that excellence should not be relied on to maintain the nation's lead in software.

Lotus business data base is now being sold by licensee

Article Abstract:

Marketplace:Business, a controversial data base product, is being sold by Marketplace Information Corp under a licensing agreement with Lotus Development Corp, which originally created and then abandoned the product. Marketplace is a data base that contains millions of names of consumers and companies. Lotus took the product off the market because customers and privacy advocates complained and protested about it. The data base comes in two versions - Marketplace:Business, and a consumer version called Households. Marketplace Information Corp, Cambridge, MA, which is the company that has licensed with Lotus to sell Marketplace, hopes to avoid reawakening controversy by selling only the business data base. Marketplace Information will not sell Households, the consumer version.
