U.S. said willing to consider alternatives to steel quota

Article Abstract:

The Clinton admnistration is expected to veto a bill that would cap steel imports from Canada and other countries. The quota bill, passed by the House of Representatives, seeks to stem a flow of cheap steel imports from regions that were affected by recession, such as Eastern Europe, Asia and South America. However, White House officials said that such steel quota legislation would only harm US exports, inflate prices and violate international trade rules.
