United Technologies, Honeywell weigh $40B stock deal

Article Abstract:

United Technologies is acquiring Honeywell International for approximately $40 billion in stock. The deal will create a giant manufacturer of industrial products that will range from aircraft engines and landing gear to fire alarms and elevators. United Technologies' shares have risen 41% from its Mar 9, 2000, low, giving it strong bargaining power in the transaction. Its proposed purchase of Honeywell comes at a time of weakness for Honeywell whose stock has declined 41% due to its Chmn and CEO Michael Bonsignore's difficulty in integrating the businesses of Honeywell and AlliedSignal which merged in Dec 2000.
