Upstart Genuity rifles talent from CIBC broker

Financiers at the brokerage arm of Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) defected for Genuity Capital Markets, an upstart investment banking boutique being launched by their former boss, David Kassie. The moves dealt a severe blow to the mergers and acquisitions team at CIBC World Markets, and deprived the firm of its headquarters, its leading equity salesman, and a vice-chairman.

MFS set to agree to second settlement

Massachusetts Financial Services Co. (MFS), Sun Life Financial Inc.'s Boston-based mutual fund firm, agreed to a $50-million settlement with Securities and Exchange Commission over allegations that the firm directed trading commissions to brokerages in exchange for preferential treatment. The first settlement involved an amount of $350-million to be paid by MFS.
