VW Mexico bit by New Beetle

Article Abstract:

Volkswagen's (VW) New Beetle plant in Puebla, Mexico, is poised to increase its production of New Beetles to 600 units per day from 500 units daily due to increase in demand. The Puebla plant, which is the lone facility in the world that is producing VW's New Beetles, intends to commence European shipments in November 1998. In early 1999, a right-hand version of New Beetle will be shipped to the UK and Japan. Aside from New Beetles, VW's Puebla plant is also producing the 1999 Jetta, the features of which are kept secret. Since March 1998, when the New Beetle was launched, VW has sold 17,431 units in the US.

Restarting 2 power plants to ease Calif. crisis

Article Abstract:

Two power plants will be restarted in California to ease the state's energy crisis. The plants have enough capacity to have prevented the rolling blackouts being experienced statewide. They will add power in Northern California, where blackouts occurred due to a 1.5% drop in power reserves. Combined, they will have 1,100 megawatts of power which is enough to have prevented even the biggest blackouts on Jan 17, 2001.

$1.2B Canadian deal may boost American Airlines

Article Abstract:

Canadian Airlines International Ltd's merger deal with Air Canada is facing impediments such as the proposal by Onex Corp and AMR Corp to buy the two airlines for $1.2 billion and then merge them. Under the proposal, Air Canada would become a partner of AMR's American Airlines, joining their frequent flyer programs and flights. Air Canada did not comment on what seemed to be an unsolicited and below-market offer.
