Video games

Article Abstract:

Some academic scholars in the US claim that playing video games is good for literacy, problem-solving, learning to test hypotheses and researching information, while critics worry that gaming is making children more socially isolated, less experienced in working with others and less creative. More and more researchers are studying why video games are so engrossing and some are even urging educators to incorporate games' best learning features into school programs.

Video games: Equity gap?

Article Abstract:

Surveys suggest that low-income children in the US are not getting the same access to technology as their middle-class peers, creating a video-gaming 'equity gap' that resembles the so-called digital divide between those with and without Internet access. This means that while middle-class homes have gaming consoles and broadband, lower-income children might only have about 10 minutes' daily access to a computer at the school library.

Video games: Testing the hypothesis

Article Abstract:

Cultural observers assert that, as video games get increasingly sophisticated and broaden their audience, it is time to conduct research to find out what is genuinely good and bad about such games. The MacArthur Foundation announced in October 2006 that it was committing US$50 million to understanding how video games and other digital media affect learning by young people and its implications for parents, teachers, and policymakers.
