Video games and push-button aggression

Article Abstract:

The popularity of Nintendo video games has intensified debates on the possible link between simulated violence and violence in children. In 1989, a study by the National Coalition on Television Violence showed that 80% of Nintendo games portray harmful violence, and further classified the games into three categories according to violent materials contained. Nintendo Company Ltd contends that there is no specific link between video games and aggressiveness in children. Additionally, the company adheres to a standard patterned after those of the movie and television broadcasting industries.

Early concerns

Article Abstract:

Violence in television was first recognized as a problem in 1952, when a Congressional subcommittee focused on media violence in relation to youth. However, media executives debunked social and political concerns with the argument that media was a factor in the rising incidence of juvenile arrests and that it was an advantage for the industry to be under self-regulation. Not even the results of a 1956 study linking violence in cartoons to increased aggressiveness and violence in children prevented the advent of more violent television programs and movies in the 1960s.

Early healers

Article Abstract:

Ancient philosophers recognized the element of hope in the recovery process. However, scientific revolution gained momentum in the 17th and 18th centuries when the rationalist philosophy of enlightenment exerted its influence and the church's control over medicine waned.
