Weather-beaten North Carolina takes another hit

Article Abstract:

North Carolina is taking a severe financial beating because of a series of natural disasters occuring within less than six months since Aug 1999. These included a severe drought, two hurricanes which prompted weeks of unprecedented flooding and record snowfall which has caused power blackouts in some areas and forced residents to stay at home and many businesses to close. A state of emergency has been called by its governor, and at least one state official said he fears for the state during the upcoming tornado season in Mar 2000.
