When Free Isn't Really Free

Article Abstract:

Many Internet users who download music for free do not understand that the software which makes the transfer possible contains programs that collect personal data from users' computers. The music downloads may cost nothing, but the software, also known by its three categories of spyware, adware and snoopware, provides download services with valuable marketing resources in exchange for giving away music recordings. Rep. Mary Bono has proposed legislation that would impose restrictions on the software.

How to keep vendors from quietly violating your privacy; using an online snoop to foil online snoops

Article Abstract:

Many vendors collect private data about computer users' Internet browsing habits or PC configuration from small applications, or auto-update applets, embedded in the software of the user's home computer. To protect themselves from invasion of their privacy, consumers can install a second applet, called a personal firewall, which will function as a gatekeeper and intercept data before it goes out to Web sites.
