Where have all the militants gone?

Article Abstract:

Bill Kelty, secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions, has kept away from public view since he warned the Australian government he would organize the biggest picket in Australian history if they dared to take on the wharfies. Kelty's efforts in 1997 only produced an offer to MUA to coordinate fund-raising efforts with their affiliated unions to support the wharfies. Furthermore, unions are concerned about the prospect of huge fines.

Let the battle royal begin

Article Abstract:

The union movement in Australia is in decline. In private and public sectors, their numbers have fallen dramatically. With each new year, unions pass resolutions, and by the end of the year, they count their failures. Workers also feel that many unions have lost touch with the everyday worker. However, the Maritime of Australia and Construction Forestry Mining and Engineering Union are still enjoying very strong support from their members.

Sometimes the truth hurts

Article Abstract:

The Australian Labor Party has become a political power since the 1960s, but it continues to miss chances and waste opportunities. The New South Wales branch of the party made a mistake in not approving the electricity industry privatization plan proposed by Premier Bob Carr. Another problem is the failure to improve the Australian Capital Territory Labor Party.
