Microsoft's new data base program

Article Abstract:

Microsoft Corp introduces its $495 Access data base management system (DBMS). Access is Microsoft's first internally developed DBMS for microcomputers, and it stands a good chance of taking much of the market from leader Borland International. Borland controls 70 to 80 percent of the data base software market. Access' outstanding features are its price, $200 less than standard; its ability to run on Microsoft Windows, while Windows versions of Borland's products are not yet out; and its ability to read other data bases without converting them to its format, making it easy for users to test Access using their own data. Microsoft has taken several years to develop Access, having abandoned a data base project in 1989 and started over; Access does use about 25 percent of the code from the earlier project.
