The 1996 Governor General's Literary Awards were a chance for Canadian authors to socialize and gain publicity for their works. Guy Vanderhaeghe won the award for fiction with his book 'The Englishman's Boy.' Marie-Claire Blais won the French-language award for her novel 'Soifs.'
