The UK saw a 41% fall in the number of new motorcycle registrations from 87,000 units in 1990 to 51,000 units in 1994. The value of the market fell by 29% in 1990-93 at current prices, from 114 million pounds sterling to 74 million pounds. Sales to the 16-24 age group, traditionally the core motorcycle market, have been affected by lifestyle changes, the poor safety image of motorcycles, and the availability of inexpensive secondhand cars. The market is dominated by Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki, which together accounted for 84% of the 1994 market, up vs 81% in 1992.
