Zeroing in on Mitsubishi

Article Abstract:

The management of Mitsubishi, the smallest of Australia's 4 car manufacturers, has for years had to deal with rumors it would close Australian operations. Sales have increased, but the company's market share continues to decrease. When the number of car models Mitsubishi produced in Australia was reduced to 5 in the 1980s, only large cars continued to be built, but the local market favors small cars.

Con job

Article Abstract:

Melbourne, Australia, is instituting an automated public transportation ticketing system called Metcard. Before privatization of the metropolitan public transport system the city gradually introduced this system on buses, railways and trams, replacing conductors with large machines. The machines sell only short-fare tickets, not all-day tickets, and only take coins, not bills.

Too much, too late

Article Abstract:

The guidelines of the Strategic Investment Program, the rescue package the government promised the textile industry, have been criticized as being too broad to be effective. Companies can receive assistance under the program without proving long-term viability, and manufacturers warn that the significant financial outlay is only a short-term subsidy for a failing industry.
