Using the existing prosthesis as a provisional restoration

Article Abstract:

There are advantages in using an existing, slightly modified denture, while a replacement denture is made. A 55-year-old female patient with a loose denture required extensive periodontal therapy. Her existing denture was removed and rebuilt to serve on a temporary basis. The metal frame was cut to break the cement seal without undue risk to the natural teeth. The dentist can access the site of surgery easily by removing the provisional denture. Stronger, more comfortable metal structures can thus be available more quickly to the patient than new temporary dentures made of acrylic.
