First home, at any price?

Article Abstract:

The government in Australia moved to double the first home buyers grant to A$14,000 for a short time, a move that was politically expeient and economically positive. It is bordering on irresponsible, though for the Prime Minister, John Howard to suggest banks should allow people to use the deposit at the only criterion for getting a home loan. People can reasonably be asked to demonstrate a modest savings record to prepare to put down a 5% deposit. The government's Financial Services Reform bill, to go into effect in 10/01 with uniform sales disclosure affecting life insurance companies and managed funds and uniform licensing requirements affecting those offering a financial service of any sort, is discussed.
