Funds could face grim future, warns regulator

Article Abstract:

Arthur Levitt, chairman of the US Securities and Exchange Commission, has said that mutual funds may face a difficult future and that expectations are unrealistic. Fund managers must address investor needs for education and communication. The situation in Australia is not greatly different from that in the US, but no regulator has been willing or able to speak above the enthusiasm of the market. Furthermore, regulations relating to this market are being reorganized and retirement fund (superannuation fund) investment choice is to be initiated in 1999.

America's problem: too much success

Article Abstract:

Investors in tax-protected retirement accounts in the US are getting a distorted picture of what they can expect because of the bull market. Investors have seen such good returns for so many years that they have begun to forget that markets can go down as well as up. In time there may be unhappiness, but in general the system works well as companies offer employees one fund family and monitor the plans, into which the money of senior executives also goes.
