The cafe and restaurant industry is growing in popularity among people interested in opening small businesses. However it is not an easy industry to enter and many do so with their redundancy or superannuation payout and join the 80 percent failure numbers within the first five years. There is a movement afoot to establish a national accreditation scheme for cafes and restaurants, however all first-time operators should obtain a financial adviser as their first point of business.

People are leaving the suburbs they once flocked to and are returning to the city. The availability of residential housing near town is one of the drawing points. There is a strong demand for apartment developments. Their popularity grew in the 1980s as a result of low commercial property values. Residential development then became affordable.
