Australians with a desire to invest in infrastructure projects purchased shares in developers or companies investing in Asian infrastructure projects. In 1996, an Infrastructure and Utilities index was created so Australians have the opportunity to invest in more targeted infrastructure companies and trusts representing about 1.1% of All Ordinaries. Seven companies and trusts comprise the index.

Even though Austranian's treasurer, Peter Costello has forecasted a favorable outlook for the 1997-98 year, he has revised forecast down in the past and last year the treasury factored in a large 2% error margin. Watch for signs such as the wage growth outcomes and the US economy.
