There are four basic kinds of hearing aids, behind-the ear, in the ear, canal, and completely in the canal. The smaller the aid, the more costly. Prices range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand. Tips on hearing disorders, ways to detect hearing loss, and new digital aids are discussed.

Sweet news for diabetics

New 1994 guidelines from the American Diabetes Assn gives type I and II diabetics a wider range of choice in substituting carbohydrates in their menus. The guidelines recommend an individualized food plan, proper spacing of meals and regular blood-sugar monitoring.

Winning the war: a cure for cancer? Not yet, but the news is good

A small but significant decrease in the cancer death rate, -0.5% from 1990-95, is thanks to advances in cancer research, detection, treatment, and prevention. Genetic research hold sthe greatest promise of the most cures in the future.
