Nursing-home reform Now!

Article Abstract:

The unanimous passage of the nursing-home reform act in both houses of the Texas legislature serves as a model for other states wishing to do something to improve the living conditions of those living in nursing homes. Passage of the bill required substantial effort but will benefit many.

Health-care reform compels choice

Article Abstract:

Sec Louis Sullivan of the Dept of Health and Human Services feels there are two basic health-care choices: we can continue the present system or adopt a government-controlled system. Sullivan prefers the present system with tax credits for poorer families not covered by Medicaid.

The political campaigns of the 1996 election year have called attention to the need for campaign reform. The weaknesses of the current system include favors for big contributors, the wealthy receiving more attention, and the dominance of 30-second television spots.
