There are nine women senators in 1996, a surprisingly high number in consideration of the fact that only 15 women had served in the Senate in its entire history prior to 1993, most serving the remaining term of a deceased husband. The individual experiences of women senators are discussed.

The activity of humans is often responsible for the spread of viral diseases. For example, the Korean War resulted in changing the Korean hemorrhagic fever, spread by the Hantaan virus, from a local to a global disease. This and the spread of other viral diseases are discussed.
