People who are worried about the possibility of a computer glitch closing down everything in the year 2000 need to examine how optimistic Americans were in 1900. New technologies, new laws and a strong economy kept people buoyant until World War I. Today's Americans need to find a little more hope for the millennium.

A writer describes his experience writing a book about the Washington Sentors in 1969, and discusses their new manager, Ted Williams. Williams improved the rank of the ailing baseball team to fourth in the American League East that season. The team reunited in 1998, with Williams, then 80, in attendance.
