Mortgage competition batters bank

Article Abstract:

Even though the Bank of Melbourne year-end results ending Dec 1996 seemed okay, bank shareholders will not do as well. They will have to pay the price of competition in the interest rate war. The competitive environment effected the net interest earned by the bank, which was down 7% during the first half of 1996.

TAB Limited, a gambling concern, has performed well and is considered a strong buy by at least one broker. Investing in gambling has the added risk that communities may demand legislation controlling the spread of gambling.
