Your money and the GST

Article Abstract:

The proposed introduction of a goods and services tax (GST) in Australia July 1, 2000, may not happen. However, investors and consumers would do well to give some thought to the implications of this indirect tax. According to Alan Smolak, principal of a consulting group, Gang of Four, which advises businesses on dealing with new goods and services taxes when they are imposed on a country, says financial services are GST-exempt in almost every other country that has introduced an indirect tax system. The Australian government is not saying what services it will exempt, but the detested financial institutions duty and bank accounts debits are to be abolished, making bank users happy.

Japan's economy will pull out of dive

Article Abstract:

Australian investors can expect Japan to recover from economic crisis. Most of Japan's economic fundamentals are in place. These includ savings, a healthy account surplus, Japan's position as a leading creditor nation and the strength of its manufacturing industry remain. Investors should expect further crisis around the world, which may keep the Australian dollar volatile and uncertain. Australians should also keep eye out for economic recovery in commodity prices and in the value of commodity-based Australian shares.

The end of the bankster era?

Article Abstract:

Financial deregulation was widely instituted in Aug 1997, and appears to have benefited financial institutions and their customers. Deregulation has positively affected diversification, new product and service developments and there have been improvements in technology and productivity. On the negative side, there is greater volatility in interest and exchange rates and the entry of foreign banks have lowered lending standards.
