A bridge too far?

Article Abstract:

The scrapping of the project to construct the 21,000 km. Pan-American Highway system is good news for environmentalists, human rights activists and the Indians affected by the project. The highway would have passed through a narrow strip of land between North and South America, where the Choco and the Cuna Indians live and where one of the world's rarest and most fragile ecosystems can be found. Bridging the Darien Gap would have eliminated the last effective barrier to the spread of foot and mouth disease from North America to the South.

Poles apart

Article Abstract:

The exact location of the North Pole has eluded explorers since the 19th century. Commander James Ross claimed to have discovered the Magnetic North Pole in 1831, although it has drifted 150 kilometers north in the last decade. Dr. Frederick Cook and later Robert Peary thought they had discovered the stationary Geographic North Pole, but Englishman Wally Herbert finally pinned down its location and set foot on it in 1969.

Kidnapped!

Article Abstract:

An attempted jeep trip from the UK to Sri Lanka in 1957, including a harrowing encounter with 20 Afghan horsemen in a remote, dangerous region of Afghanistan, is described. The Afghans' appreciation for the equine knowledge of Johnny Clements, one of the travelers, helped defuse a tense situation.
