A desert dilemma

Article Abstract:

The development of a tourist industry in the Sinai desert raises concerns about the area's environment and the traditional lifestyle of the Bedouin. The population boom in Egypt has led to a search for income to fund development projects, and tourism, which now accounts for 6% of Egypt's gross national product, is the most accessible market to tap. The Bedouin of the area view tourism with caution, as it threatens their environment and political autonomy. Fundamentalists have recognized Egypt's reliance on tourism and have carried out violent acts against visitors in hopes of gaining political clout.

Mount Olympus: altitude and vegetation zones

Article Abstract:

The Greek government conservation efforts protect Mount Olympus's dense, richly varied vegetation, which changes with altitude and soil conditions. This World Heritage Site's ecosystems are well-managed and it has been given national park status. A woodlands maquis ecosystem dominates at an altitude of 400 meters, rising to denser central European vegetation at 700 meters, followed by thinner vegetation at 1,500 meters, and the tree line and grasses at 2,300 meters. Rocky terrain is found at the summit. The Greek government plans to push for increased tourism to this area.

Desert island desires

Article Abstract:

LIterary portrayals of island life reflect western culture's long-standing interest in going back to nature. Western authors use desert islands as settings to explore fantasies of 'pre-industrial peacefulness and innocent sexuality.' Books ranging from Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe' to J.D. Wyss' 'The Swiss Family Robinson' Europeanize island life by portraying it as idyllic and nature as tame and giving.
