The natural battleground

Article Abstract:

Sea Lion Island has a natural wealth of wildlife because of its geographical isolation as the most southerly island in the Falklands, 22.5 km from the nearest human settlement. Gentoo, Rockhopper and Magellanic penguins breed regularly on the island and the macaroni and king penguins are among the 40 bird species that often nest or visit there. The southern elephant seal, which weighs up to four tons, is the largest creature breeding there. Sea lions and orcas also visit. The island was the site of sea lion hunting in the 18th and 19th centuries, but today it is a private wildlife reserve.

Natural forgiveness

Article Abstract:

Debt-for-nature swaps, a mild success so far, may increase dramatically in the near future. The swaps, in which part of a country's external debt is forgiven in exchange for preserving wilderness areas, have been the province of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) like Conservation International. Now, governmental agencies like the Inter-American Development Bank, the Export-Import Bank of the U.S., and the private Bank of America are considering larger swaps, in order to alleviate the Latin American debt crisis.

Natural allies: biology and geography

Article Abstract:

The disciplines of biology and geography may have combined to form a new discipline. Biogeography examines the geographical distribution of plant and animal species. Students of biogeography may analyze the patterns of diversity of species on land and in the oceans. They may examine how species evolve and become extinct. They may use the new technology of remote sensing to study land and ocean species in hard to reach areas.
