Clear water revival

Article Abstract:

Indian politicians have ignored the pollution of the Ganges river for decades, but in 1992 Indian environmentalists met with specialists from Boston, MA in Varanasi, India to learn about the program to clean up Boston harbor. Though the Ganga Action Plan which is supposed to help clean up the Ganges has been in place for some years, many critics feel that it is ineffective. There are similarities between Boston and Varanasi such as the age of the sewage system and its relation to storm drains which suggest that solutions may be transferable.

Prognosis for the planet

Article Abstract:

Industrial countries have escaped Malthusian predictions with scientific innovation, while poorer nations have not. Environmental problems related to overpopulation, such as global warming, desertification and water shortages, have direr consequences for underdeveloped countries. The heavier use of global resources by developed nations exacerbates these consequences, leading to increased political instability. Governments must plan and work together to alleviate the environmental crisis caused by improper use and distribution of resources.

Mission to save the planet

Article Abstract:

The technologically advanced European Remote Sensing Satellite (ERS-2) will supply much needed data about changes in the earth and its atmosphere. With the satellite's data, scientists can pinpoint areas which are affected by deforestation, ozone depletion, and other types of environmental destruction. With information gleaned from ERS-2, scientists may have the necessary weapons to deter environmental catastrophe.
