Trekking to save the treeline

Article Abstract:

The Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) has been in operation since 1986, trying to ameliorate the impact of a growing population and increasing tourist traffic on this remote region of Nepal. ACAP has been educating the local populace in using more efficient methods of heating, forestry and other resource use. Trekkers are also being targetted for the amount of waste they generate and the energy resources they use. Funding comes from external sources and fees on tourists. ACAP plans to expand to other areas over the next five years.

The high life

Article Abstract:

The Sherpa people of Khumbu, Nepal, who live at the gateway to Mount Everest, have benefited greatly from their proximity to the mountain as their skills as guides are greatly sought after by climbers. Edmund Hillary relied on them for his historic 1953 ascent with the result being the creation of the Sir Edmund Hillary Himalayan Trust which helped fund the construction of a hospital and school, as well as helping maintain the historic Thyangboche Monastery and providing help in preserving traditional Sherpa practices.
