Pick of the new

Article Abstract:

There has been an increase in the number of places available in geography courses in English universities. This is because of the government's decision to provide 1/3 of school leaving students with university education and because of designating polytechnics as universities. It is important to know the direction of a department before choosing its courses. The general trend seems to be towards environment-based courses and geographical information systems. A list of the geography courses offered in the new universities is included.

Strange bedfellows

Article Abstract:

Historians and geographers have traditionally maintained separate disciplines, especially in Britain, but each side needs to admit the value of the other. The two disciplines often converge, such as when considering how terrain and climate have shaped the United Kingdom's social history, or how population density influenced social structures in the English Civil War. A humanities curriculum that promotes cooperation between geography and history is emerging, and should be encouraged.

The answer's in the soil

Article Abstract:

Several simple tests can be applied to soil samples to obtain a profile of the soil's characteristics. The color, texture, infiltration rate, stoniness, structure, pH and moisture level can all easily be assessed. These methods can be used to develop an overview of a region's soil, and can be the basis of studies of topics such as soil erosion.
