Dreaming of a white Christmas?

Article Abstract:

There have been two white Christmases in Great Britain between 1893 and 1995, illustrating the rarity of snowfall in the islands during December. The 1995 Christmas Day storm covered both Eastern England and Western Wales with approximately 30 cm of snow and extremely low temperatures, including a near record -24 degrees celsius in Glasgow, Scotland. The cold temperatures continued throughout the week after Christmas until a sudden warming trend hit the country, bursting many pipes with a 10 degree jump in temperature on December 30, 1995.

Summertime blues

Article Abstract:

The summer of 1996 saw average temperatures, rainfall, and climactic trends throughout most of the UK. The month of August was the most interesting with fears of drought in some parts of the country and a heavy rainstorm in the town of Folkestone. Concerns over global warming were somewhat abated as the summer temperatures were basically cool in comparison to the previous year. Most forecasters predict a dry fall as the summer had little rainfall.

Slapton Ley Nature Reserve, on the South Devon coast of Great Britain, is a diverse, eutrophic wetland. The Reserve must contend with the encroachment of tourists who favor the adjoining beach. Another important issue is the management of the natural process of succession. Slapton's management strives to preserve species from both natural and man-made threats. Slapton will soon become a National Nature Reserve, thereby ensuring its future.
