Stepping offshore

Article Abstract:

US utilities need to prepare their employees before sending them to overseas assignments. Since cultural barriers are an important factor in exploiting business opportunities, US executives begun to set up local partnerships, establish community programs and learn foreign languages and develop personal relationships with their local counterparts. Despite these, expatriates will still have to cope with reduced employment opportunities for their spouses and to develop nonverbal communication skills.

Humor is serious business

Article Abstract:

Several electric utilities have turned to humor consultants to help relieve employee stress brought about by the deregulation, downsizing and increased competition in the industry. In other industries, programs provided by humor consultants have helped address stress-related consequences such as absenteeism, health complaints and productivity problems. Consultants also emphasized that managers should take the initiative in using humor to lighten up the workplace.

A severe diagnosis

Article Abstract:

US telecommunications, gas and electric utility industries are facing the same crisis as all other US industries with respect to rising health care costs. Unlike other industries, heavy regulatory control precludes the utilities' ability to recoup additional health care costs by simply passing them on to consumers in the form of higher prices. Various health care reform proposals are expected to have a financial impact on the electric utility industry.
