Reindeer nations of Siberia

Article Abstract:

The 26 indigenous peoples of the north and eastern fringes of Siberia face dramatic changes resulting from the demise of Soviet communism. The 183,700 individuals reported by the 1989 census suffer from many problems common to ethnic minorities of the former Soviet Union such as alcoholism, high unemployment and poor education. Reindeer herding and fishing form most of their economic base, and there is little likelihood of their receiving economic assistance from the troubled new Commonwealth. One proposal favored by the Koryaks is the formation of a large national park in Kamchatka.

Last great wilderness

Article Abstract:

The Kamchatka Peninsula area of the Russian tundra, which has a large indigenous population subsisting on reindeer and salmon, faces ecological damage from mineral exploitation such as gold mining. Moreover, foreign fishermen and hunters have decreased the natives' salmon catch and killed many of the region's bears. The main tribal groups, the Koryaks and the Itelmens, have requested help from Survival International in their fight to preserve their way of life and food sources.

Under African skies

Article Abstract:

A vacation to East Africa leads an explorer to thoughts of the general public's misconceptions of the world and how such ideas should be reconsidered after the singular experience of living in the African desert. The vacation and conservation activities stimulate memories of previous expeditions in which the explorer traveled with indigenous people and slept outside. The experiences served to broaden her sense of nature, the universe, and humanity's place in the world.
