Last resort for the Mediterranean

Article Abstract:

A combination of agricultural practices, industrial waste and climatic changes are threatening to turn the Mediterranean region into a desert, and its sea into a cesspool. As irrigation opens new lands to agricultural use, depleted areas are abandoned, leading to severe erosion. This irrigation is taking most of the water from the region's rivers, which are polluted from the production of jam and heavy metals. The European Community has established the Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use project to identify and study endangered areas and to propose remedies. Emphasis has been placed on improving agricultural management and the effects of global warming.

Sands of time

Article Abstract:

Sand dunes vary in origin, composition, mobility and vegetation. Most varieties collect fresh water beneath them, and all been affected in some way by man. Europe has sand dune systems on the Atlantic, North Sea and Mediterranean coasts. Land in Denmark and Netherlands has been devastated by drifting dunes, and the two countries began sand control practices in the 18th century. Tree planting, water supply engineering and recreational and building development on European dunes are chronicled, and the damage done by such workings of civilization is examined.

Funds in fragile places

Article Abstract:

Environmentalists claim that European Community (EC) structural funds are threatening the environment in Europe. These funds include the European Regional Development Fund, the European Social Fund and the Guidance Section of the Community Agricultural Fund. The goal of these funds is to provide investment for less developed areas. These funds are replacing fishing and farming with aquaculture, which causes ecological damage. The EC should consider both economic and environmental issues when directing these funds.
