Eat, drink and be merry

Article Abstract:

Proper nutrition and hydration while on an expedition are crucial. Diets must be varied and appropriate to the environment of the expedition. In hot climates, too much protein is a bad idea and in cold climates, hot food is essential. In humid climates, food storage can be a problem, while in the mountains, the main consideration is weight. The different means of water purification are discussed.

Tools of the trade

Article Abstract:

Backpackers embarking on wilderness treks should pack a torch and a multitool. Several torches, which are more durable than flashlights, are described, including the Mag Lite and Lightsticks. The Swiss Army knife is an example of a multitool instrument, and may be invaluable for tasks ranging from opening cans to signaling aircraft. Other multitools are reviewed.
