A green landmark

Article Abstract:

The UN Conference on Environment and Development or Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in Jun 1992 may be of lasting importance due to the Biodiversity and Climate Change Conventions. The approval of these documents by 150 countries was a significant achievement, especially given the narrow-minded opposition of some participants. Non-government organizations must now take it upon themselves to check on compliance with the Earth Summit's declarations. Unfortunately, the conference failed to address the role of overpopulation in both poverty and environmental deterioration.

End of an era

Article Abstract:

John Hemming ends his 21 years as director of the Royal Geographic Society delighted with its accomplishments and evolution during that period. He started in 1975 with a professional and highly regarded organization with a small fellowship and troubled finances, building it through recruitment drives and a new, better-focused lecture program. Training for small expeditions led to the Expedition Advisory Center, and the Society has expanded and refined its collections of books, maps, pictures, and archives.

The age of discovery is now

Article Abstract:

Many famous explorations and discoveries have happened over the years, but the time for scientific investigation and discovery is not past. There are large areas of ocean as well as arctic and tropical regions not yet explored by humanity. There is still much to be learned about ecosystems and the rich variety of animal and insect species.
