Turning the tide

Article Abstract:

Coral Cay Conservation (CCC) is a group established by marine biologist Pete Raines to foster preservation of coral reefs worldwide. CCC enlists 300 to 500 volunteers annually to survey reefs and help plan protection efforts in locations such as Belize, the Philippines, the Red Sea, Indonesia and the Maldives. Much of Belize's coral reef is now recognized as a UN World Heritage Site thanks largely to CCC's efforts. The greatest threats to coral reefs are the use of explosives and cyanide to take fish, and the clear-cutting of rainforests, which releases reef-smothering sediments into coastal areas.

Sensory overload

Article Abstract:

Kathmandu, Nepal, is a mixture of centuries-old traditions and buildings alongside modern urban touches such as an airport, automobiles, and factories. The historic Durbar Square area features the Old Royal Palace and numerous nearby temples. The Living Goddess, or Kumari Devi, lives nearby, a prominent individual in a largely Hindu country that also has many Buddhists. Kathmandu's population is 419,000, composed mostly of people of Newari descent, although many Tibetan refugees and Indians have moved into the area. Nepal's overall population is approximately 13 million.

On location...

Article Abstract:

Film directors often engage in 'geographical deception' due to political restrictions and economic reasons. For example, the 1987 film 'Full Metal Jacket' was set in Vietnam yet the film was shot in England. Tax incentives are another reason why film makers chose alternative filming locations. The 1994 film 'Braveheart' was filmed in Ireland, rather than Scotland, due to the availability of free army reservists for battle scenes.
