In Patagonia

Article Abstract:

Very few tours go to Patagonia region of Chile, an isolated rugged area between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, but an expedition-based trip to British charity Raleigh International's Jeinemeni Nature Reserve, is an excellent way to see the area. At Jeinemeini, travellers can observe and help survey the rare huemul deer, practice mountain survival methods, or learn ski kayaking. Raleigh volunteers must endure strenuous conditions for the opportunity to live with the local people who inhabit this remote region.

Secret life of seahorses

Article Abstract:

Marine biologist Amanda Vincent, the world's foremost expert on sea horses, is attempting to halt the worldwide decline in this animal's numbers. Some areas have lost 50% of their sea horses to worldwide trade. Over 20 mil sea horses are traded each year as aquarium pets, ornamental objects, and for traditional Chinese medicine, a market which has surged since 1992. Dr. Vincent set up the first sea horse conservation project in 1995 in the Philippines.

A century of mapping

Article Abstract:

The Times Atlas of the World has celebrated its 100th anniversary of documenting the world's names and places. The Times Atlas was first published in 1895, when the British empire spanned the globe. Mapmaking has become easier and more precise today, with digitized maps replacing hand drawn ones. Yet some areas of the world have not been mapped accurately because of political or size constraints.
