Bullish on weather: new financial tools can help protect utility revenues from weather-related risk

Article Abstract:

Weather risk management are new financial tools to protect electric utilities from the adverse, unexpected impact of weather extremes on the bottom lines. These financial tools insulate revenues, making electric utilities enjoy more stable and predictable earnings even during warm winters and cool summers. Heating and cooling degree days usually have a direct effect on the utility company's planning and revenues since cold summers and warm winter may decrease sales for space cooling, make capacity sluggish, and increase average cost of power production.
