Cities on the Silk Road

Article Abstract:

Merv, a cluster of ancient cities in the Kara Kum Desert of Turkmenistan, was once a prosperous center on the ancient Silk Road trading route. Merv was established around 500 BC and reached its greatest development in the 11th and 12th centuries, when it was the eastern capital of the Great Seljuks. Its ruins have been investigated since 1992 with three major excavations and a survey to map the four to seven cities. Climate and urban development are deteriorating the quality of this archaeological dig.

Welcome to our land

Article Abstract:

Australia's return of Ayres rock, named Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park to the aboriginal people, is one example of the aboriginal tourist industry's beginning. It is the first National park to be jointly run by aboriginal people and an Australian conservation board. In this case, aboriginal people have the freedom and power to oversee how their ancient lands are used. Success of the tourist industry will do much to offset the high unemployment and poverty experienced by most indigenous people.
