Connecting Boston

Article Abstract:

The central Artery constructed in 1959 at Boston to carry cars and commerce swiftly across the city was demolished and replaced by an eight-to ten-lane, two-tunnel underground Interstate expressway running directly beneath it. The project which took 20 years to complete, includes extension of the Massachusetts Turnpike through South Boston, the Ted Williams Tunnel under Boston Harbor, five interchanges to Logan International Airport, altogether spanning 7.8 miles of highway and nearly 165 lane miles.
