Jungle geopolitics

Article Abstract:

The Brazilian military's plans for developing the northern frontier of Brazil are endangering the region's ecology. In particular, the massive Calha Norte project threatens much of Amazonia, as the military and industry build roads, army bases and dams, displace indigenous peoples and bring settlers into a previously pristine area. Brazilian military policy, with its long-established interest in border security and assisting economic development, is in conflict with the Amazon's peoples and ecology.

The sustainable sawmill

Article Abstract:

The Wokabaut, a portable compact sawmill used in Papua New Guinea, may encourage development of an indigenous, sustainable logging trade. Papua New Guinea's rainforests have been damaged by the use of heavy machinery, which causes loss of topsoil. The Wokabaut, designed to be carried by men or animals, requires no roads and might provide more revenue for locals than logging royalties. Whether the government can turn back logging companies in favor of a Wokabaut-based industry remains to be seen.

Tips for the trees

Article Abstract:

Logging is now the chief cause of deforestation in the Amazon, but present operations are not sustainable and many exist illegally on land set aside for Indians and wildlife. Profits from timber sales are used to finance roads and farms that further deforestation. A pilot program in Ecuador is a model for responsible rainforest logging. This project of the Ecological Trading Co consults and employs indigenous peoples, uses no motor vehicles and tries to distribute tree loss in a natural manner.
