Determining the K Most Critical Paths in PERT Networks

Article Abstract:

The critical paths and critical activities are identified in PERT networks. The criticality index of a path is defined. It is the probability that the duration of the path is greater than or equal to all other paths. Also, the criticality index of an activity is defined as the sum of the criticality indices of the paths containing the activity. Stochastic dominance is used to identify the most critical paths without the taks of enumerating candidates. A chart of the heuristic to identify the most critical paths is included. Tables contain numerical results and diagrams of networks are available.

The coming plague

Article Abstract:

Mankind is far from winning its battle against contagious diseases. International travel, civil wars and the urbanization of developing countries are creating conditions conducive to the spread of potentially lethal bacteria, viruses and parasites. In her book 'The Coming Plague,' science journalist Laurie Garrett traces the history of these communicable diseases and the scientists who keep track of them. She contends that health problems will grow worse if people do not become vigilant about disease control and surveillance.

Divergent paths

Article Abstract:

Ethiopian Jewish immigrants to Israel have found transition to Israeli life difficult. While the Jewish state airlifted the Falashas in 1984 and 1991, and has provided social services for them, they are still isolated by language, race, culture and religious practices. Israel is having difficulty absorbing a wave of Soviet immigrants, and conflict between the Falashas and Soviet Jews is feared. Various segments of the Israeli population also fear the Falashas may lose their traditions to the lure of secular society.
