Field wise

Article Abstract:

The UK Royal Geographic Society's Expedition Advisory Center (EAC) supports high-quality fieldwork, especially by undergraduates, with seminars and printed guides as well as grants. In March 1996 the EAC co-hosted a series of London seminars on field techniques for assessing biodiversity, led by experts who have run multiple expeditions. These included training in using increasingly affordable high-technology equipment for recording sounds, digital mapping, and Global Positioning Systems.

Load in and wise up

Article Abstract:

Microsoft's Encarta '95 CD-ROM encyclopedia is a multi-media database using video, audio, and photographic clips as well as extensive text. Its geographical coverage would be improved by additional access points for novice users, while its anthropomorphic and US biases are annoying. However, it can provide a wealth of information for students, and its video and hyper-text features are truly exceptional.
